Many of our products are employed as precursors meaning fore-runners often of thin oxide films. More than a hundred years ago the term was appropriated to a class of steam locomotive used to haul passenger trains from London to Liverpool in connection with transatlantic liner sailings from the latter port. The doyen of the class duly bore the eponymous name as shown in the artist’s impression published in the January 1908 issue of The Railway Magazine.
